Garytoons!

For the young, Matlock was a TV show in the 80’s and 90’s about a lawyer named Ben Matlock, starring Andy Griffith.  If you’re too young to know who he was, Google is your friend.

For the confused, yes, there is such a thing as a genuine Tijuanan surfing monkey.  I should know, because I have one.  Technical neanderthal that I am, though, I can’t insert the stupid picture of it here, so you’re gonna have to see it here:

As you can see, he is a lovely surfing monkey.  His name is Bob.  I got him in Tijuana, many moons ago.  I bartered the guy at the border who was selling them down to 12 bucks for it.  (Can you imagine??)  He resides in my closet, and guards one of my other prized possessions, my genuine replica Gilligan hat signed by the man himself, Bob Denver, to me.  Before his passing, naturally…

All of this to say, no, there’s no way the vast majority of the general public would have ANY idea what I’m referring to in these strips when I mention Jimmy’s surfing monkey, unless I gave you the background info, or you happen to have one yourself.

So now you know.
